In your crosshatched sphere, draw the first set of lines in a crescent shape along one side of the circle. Then draw your second set of lines at the bottom, that's where the heaviest shadow would be. Since the top lines don't get crossed, that creates the midtone in this drawing of a pretty un-round circle. Notice at the bottom the contour line is heavier that at the top?
